Georgetown Elementary
Positive Behavior Support System

Welcome to the Georgetown Elementary PBS website, designed to inform you about how we are promoting positive behavior throughout our school. Please feel free to e-mail us with any input or to join our PBS team as a parent representative.

What is PBS?
“PBS is a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning results while preventing problem behavior” (Center on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support, 2001).
One of our PBS goals is to establish a positive and safe school climate that promotes academic, social, and emotional development.   We place great emphasis on the importance of preventing behavior problems by using a proactive and positive approach to behavior rather than a reactive and punitive method.

Rules and Motto

As a PBS team, we developed five school wide rules and a school motto. Each teacher was provided with a lesson plan that required student participation  to help them learn the five rules. These rules apply to the bus, classroom, hallways, and cafeteria.

The five Bee Rules are:

  • Be ready to learn.
  •  Be a good listener.
  • Be sure to keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  • Be mindful of your manners.
  • Be safe.

Our school motto is:
As a part of Georgetown Elementary, I will be responsible and show respect to myself, to others, and to my school.

Rewards

Has your child come home with a bracelet or a Buzz Award?  Have you heard that your child’s class has earned a treat?  These are just a few examples of the kinds of rewards that students at Georgetown Elementary School can earn for knowing and following the five Bee Rules.

Buzz Awards/Bee Hive

There are many ways a student can earn a Buzz Award. If a student is “caught” following a Bee Rule, s/he may be given a Buzz Award by any staff member, including a bus driver or a cafeteria worker. In addition, a scenario is presented each morning where students determine which rule is being demonstrated or broken. If the student correctly identifies the rule, s/he is rewarded with a Buzz Award. If 85% of the class gets it correct, a bee is added to the class beehive.
Each homeroom has a class beehive for earning group rewards.  Each class votes on five rewards they would most like to earn, such as a popcorn party, a pizza party, an ice cream party, or extra recess time.  Once a class receives 20 bees, the entire class earns a reward. There is even a beehive in the cafeteria where students can earn a bee for minding their manners.

Bee Certificate

The Bee Certificate is given to students at Progress Report time. This is given to those who are on the road to earning a Bracelet or even a Bee Shirt!

Moon Bounce

At the end of each marking period, a reward is given for perfect attendance. Students earn recess time in the moon bounce.  If you feel that your child has earned the moon bounce but did not participate, please contact Mr. Stong.

Bracelet

During our Bee Assembly, your child’s name may be called for earning a Bee Bracelet. This bracelet is almost the same as the Bee Shirt. A student can earn up to 4 bracelets in one school year! These are given to students who have followed all five-Bee Rules for the entire marking period.

Bee Shirt

The Bee Shirt is the top prize for our school. If a student has shown outstanding behavior everywhere in the building or on the school bus, s/he may be nominated for a Bee Shirt. Each staff member is only allowed to nominate one student, so these are very special.
